Former Clemson coach Danny Ford was thought to be the leading candidate for the ECU job, but Thursday Ford told a reporter, "I'm on my farm today and I plan on being here tomorrow."
This will be Skip's second head coaching job. Holtz guided the Connecticut Huskies for five years before joining his father, Lou Holtz, at South Carolina for six seasons. Skip was not retained by new USC head coach Steve Spurrier.

Not a bad hire, but I would have preferred Willingham, Ford or Zook. Holtz is certainly an impressive coach, not just for his name but what he accomplished at UConn. I'm sure he also learned a lot from his dad.
I wonder if the hire had anything to do with wanting someone who could potentially stay for a career. Maybe Holland got the feeling from Zook that he'd just stay for a few years until something better opened up. Perhaps Skip wants to stay close to his family. (Is his dad retiring in the Columbia, SC area?)
Of course, this all assumes Holtz really is the pick. We'll see.
