Zookless Wonder

Note this Terry Holland quote regarding Skip Holtz in Saturday's Daily Reflector:
There were things that we needed to do to make sure we were willing to pass up the opportunity to even have anyone else on the campus. He is the only one that visited the campus. After that first interview, we became very focused on him.

That casts a large shadow the Al Myatt report that the fired Florida coach was a strong contender who would visit campus. With Zook apparently getting interest from Ole Miss and Illinois, the idea that he had ever considered ECU looks increasingly unlikely.

Exactly. The only names that were ever mentioned that came from "sources close to the situation" were Holtz and Ford.

I can tell you this, with absolute certainty...Ron Zook was interested in ECU, spoke to Terry Holland and wanted to wait until after the Bowl Game. Holland wanted him to visit ECU before the Bowl Game and was not keen on letting Zook coach the Bowl Game first. Holland also knew that given time, others would come calling on Zook and that the $800k - $1 million that ECU was alloting would start to look a lot smaller once other schools got involved. ALSO, Ty Willingham was called directly by the AD office. Willingham told them that he was not interested in the job.

This info comes from a source within the AD office and is one of the two people who would know (wink, wink...).

Holtz became the most appealing option when it became clear that TH wanted to have a bunch of money to pay assistant coaches. I am absolutely happy with this hire, by the way.
