Pirate Defense

The only good defense I remember during the Logan years was the season Larry Coyer spent in Greenville. Check him out now:
DENVER (AP) -- Never one to hold back, Broncos defensive coordinator Larry Coyer said Wednesday that Denver plans "to go raise mortal hell" with the Indianapolis offense this weekend.

In an animated interview, Coyer acknowledged the huge challenge the Colts present, but said nobody on the Broncos was surrendering.

His most fiery comments came in answer to questions about Broncos rookie Roc Alexander, who has been forced into a nickel back role in the secondary and will have to cover one of Indianapolis' three 1,000-yard receivers.

"It's tough for everybody," Coyer said. "It's competitive. These are good players. But the thought process can't be that way. They are what they are. We are what we are. And we've got to go raise hell and see who wins. We're going to go raise mortal hell and we'll find out."

Coyer acknowledged his players weren't ready the last time they traveled to Indianapolis -- a 41-10 loss in last season's playoffs. He gave credit to the Colts coaching staff and praised Peyton Manning.

"The quarterback is so adept at finding where the holes are, it makes you want to puke," he said.

But give up? Coyer certainly won't.

"They've got great players," he said. "We're going to tee it up and see what happens. Let's wait until the game and then make our comments."
The Broncos may not be able to stop Manning et al, but they have been pretty damn good this season. They were fourth in the league in total defense.

Can you imagine what the Pirates could have done in the late '90s if they had had the D to go with the O?

Funny thing about that Coyer year...Logan was forced to hire Coyer. Coyer, in one season, took us from like 101st in total defense to 54th or something like that, proving that scheme and technique and coaching, can indeed, change things radically!
