Thompson's loss could be Herrion's gain

By Davis Fisher, Kinston Free Press

For East Carolina head basketball coach Bill Herrion, the firing of John Thompson as head football coach by Athletics Director Terry "Quick Draw" Holland may have been a mixed blessing.

Perhaps Herrion should consider sending a note of thanks to Thompson for saving his job for another season.

Besides Thompson, East Carolina is paying former head football coach Steve Logan. The Pirates are paying the two a combined $300,000 per year to not be in Greenville.

Figure in the salaries of the current football staff, and the Pirates can more than likely not afford to pay another coach to go away at this point.

If Holland were to fire Herrion, who has a base salary of $100,000, the Pirates would be paying three former head coaches $400,000 not to be in Greenville.

East Carolina's basketball team is 4-7 as it enters the second half of the season. The Pirates were 1-5 in December.

The first 11 games have been anything but pretty for the Pirates, and at times it has been downright painful to watch.

The Pirates have lost five straight and are 2-5 in the last seven games. The Pirates opened the season with consecutive wins, but are 2-7 since defeating Oregon State and Pepperdine in the BCA Invitational in Raleigh.

Wow. Still waiting for a winning season after 6 years. Has it been that long?
