Pirates still facing steep climb

Great column from Denny O'Brien at Bonesville. These two paragraphs are both refreshingly honest and soberingly worrisome:

From the opening drive to the final horn, the Deacons outran, out-hit, and out-witted the Pirates on Saturday. Wake was superior in every aspect of the game — just as it has been during each of the last five meetings between the two.

On the contrary, East Carolina never truly appeared comfortable, let alone in any kind of rhythm. And the final tally — 44-34 — hardly summarizes the ease with which Wake manhandled the Pirates physically for most of the game.
I needed to hear that about the score not being indicative of the game. I was actually taking some pride in only getting beaten by 10 points. Apparently, ECU pride was not a product of the game.

Matt, you can take some pride away. The guys didn't quit. In my opinion, though we couldn't stop Wake, we did pull to 34-27 with the ENTIRE 4th quarter to go. Had Holts, IMO, not abandoned the run from that point on, I think we would have kept Wake off the field in the fourth quarter. Denny is a bit off on his assessment in that though Wake rolled on us, our offense when not engineering 1 of its 7 3-an-outs on the day, rolled over Wake's defense as well.

With WVU basically prepared to run the ball 45-50 times on Saturday, I am not predicting a win, but I believe we will have a better ball-control offense on the field this weekend.

So, rest assured that the score in the Wake game did depict how
"close" the game was. That said, they did whip our defense pretty good, mostly because of misdirection, essentially rendering our linebackers useless - the hallmark of a Jim Grobe offense.
