Rod Coleman got out of Oakland so fast he never saw the deer in his headlights until it was too late.
The Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle missed three games this season with a shoulder injury after flipping his luxury SUV on a country road in Flowery Branch, Ga., about 45 miles north of Atlanta.
"I had to get used to the South and all the animals and stuff on the road," said Coleman, a fifth-round draft pick out of East Carolina. "It's not like Oakland or Philadelphia, where you may see dogs running across the road."
"Antlergate" made the news for a few days in the Atlanta area, with the local media suspicious of the Falcons' account of the Oct.17 accident. It happened at 4:30 a.m., and authorities said Coleman had been drinking but wasn't impaired.
Now that Coleman is wreaking havoc on the field as the most influential defensive free agent acquired in the off-season on a 9-3 team, coach Jim Mora can see where the whole incident may have been of some benefit.
