Jakeleg commentary

We got us another big game boys....

Every week Coach Holtz is presented with a new coaching challenge. And by and large he has responded. I'd argue that even our two losses out of conference actually helped us get better and actually contributed to our two conference wins. I’ll trade conference wins for non-conference losses (this year). So will His Excellency Holtz…that’s why he’s my hero.

Our season is unfolding into a nice stair-stepped pattern in which each upcoming game draws upon the previous week's performance and lessons learned. Each upcoming game is a little more difficult than the week before. And most weeks we have made some improvement over the last game or shown signs of growth.

That said, we might be walking into a bitch slap this weekend. Granted, Memphis is not the C-USA power we thought they might have been be this season. But, they are a good team, at home, playing a young ECU team who is unaccustomed to success.

There is no other way to put it.....this is a must win. If we get this one, we could be playing UCF the following week for the out right C-USA east lead. I'm really appreciative of how our schedule is unfolding though, I'd much rather be playing Memphis first then UCF rather than the other way around. (I can't believe I’m concerned about a UCF game at all).

The last time we won three games in a row was on October 30th, 2001. This was also the last year we went bowling. This is a big game.

A refresher of our pre-season predictions:

GREG: Memphis 24, ECU 10 (3-4)
Another let down. Memphis is a good team, though. Future Hall of Fame collegiate football coach Skip Holtz (as I will be referring to him as at this point in the season) will use this defeat as a master motivational device in preparation for the UCF game ...

RON: Memphis 21, ECU 10 (3-4)
Memphis is going to be one of the better teams in the league — and too tough for us this year.

MATT: Memphis 38, ECU 10 (3-4)
Pirate nation returned to Earth as a clearly bigger, better team thoroughly manhandles East Carolina. Calls for an AP ranking are also quieted.

ROBB: Memphis 17, ECU 14 (3-4; 6-1 ATS)
Beale Street is Bourbon Street Lite. It's also where Matt abandoned me and Ron after yet another loss in the Liberty Bowl. Since Matt had the car, we had to walk to the hotel in the freezing cold. We didn't even know where the hotel was but Memphis is really safe for two drunk white guys at 3 in the morning. A few minutes after we close the door to our room, cursing Matt's name the whole time, he knocks. He was very chipper and told us a wild tale of crazy happenings in Memphis night.

All of our predictions have been dead-on to this point. This jakeleg would happily give up his perfect prognosticator record in exchange for a W. Let's go Pirates.......

By the way, Rob and Ron: I apologize for leaving you that night in Memphis.

And Rob, thanks for leaving out some of the most unholy elements of that evening.

No problem, my friend. Crazy times. Great stories. Beer.

Well, last year's matchup was close, but this year ECU has the benefit of a good coaching staff and a group of players who have some confidence. ECU wins when 'The General' connects on a last second field goal.

Hey Jones...I mean Duffy (call you what your mama calls you)...

That was a blast in Memphis...the details will remain muted, but I have to say, it was a great time.
