ECU Pirates: News on all Fronts

Well the good news for ECU basketball is, I guess, that they made the C-USA tournament. The bad news is that they had to because this year, all 12 teams made it. Unfortunately for ECU, we are dead last in the tournament and the end of another dreadful season should come to an unspectacular end when we play Central Florida in the first round of the C-USA tourney.

The last time we played UCF, we were crushed 64-49 so don't hold your breath for any kind of tourney surprises. I feel for Corye Rouse, who was named to the all-CUSA 2nd Team despite his pathetic team around him. Bet he is glad to be graduating.

On a much brighter note, the baseball team is rolling along at 11-3 seemingly not affected by losing 9 studs from last year's club. Pitching has been a hallmark for the team with a team ERA that is hovering around 2.50 and a team batting average just below .300. Add to that that catcher Jake Smith is leading C-USA in all significant batting statistics and it is a pretty good season so far. The guys take on N.C. A&T on Wednesday before heading to California for a season-defining series at No. 7 Cal State Fullerton. Should we take even 1 game there, it would be a boost for this team. Take more than 1 game and this team will become instant contenders for major national recognition.

On to football...spring practice is going well. Looks like linebackers are going to be studs, making us all forget about losing all of our starters to graduation.

General impressions that I have gathered so far are that JUCO linebackers Orlando Farrow, Fred Wilson, and Daniel Muhwezi are all game-ready studs who give us actually bigger, stronger linebackers finally in the mold of Penn State and Oklahoma.

Other developments include the return of Jamar Flournoy (aka J5) to the Safety position after sitting out last year on a suspension levied by Holtz. He is a killer back there who should be in line for post-season honors. Some injuries of note: Marcus Hands is going to be limited this spring as he rehabs after surgery and I believe Aundrae Allison will miss all of the spring rehabbing after his surgery. Also, despite having a year of eligibility left, tight end Shawn Levesque decided to graduate and get on with his life.

Offensive line is a focal point as we graduated 4 from an OL that produced the 10th highest offensive average output in school history at just shy of 400 yards per game. The two guys coming back are solid in Eric Graham and Matt Butler. Also, Josh Coffman at 6-7 and nearly 300 pounds has completed the transformation from tight end to tackle and should be a force after redshirting last year. Big trouble spot is at Center where they are looking to find any lineman who can freakin snap a football.
